Pregnancy Milestones To Cherish

Pregnancy is undeniably one of life’s most cherished and transformative experiences that can represent a once-in-a-lifetime journey for many or something women get to do only a few times. As expectant parents, each milestone along the way—from the first fluttering kicks to the anticipation of holding your newborn—is a precious moment to be celebrated and cherished. By lovingly tracking these milestones, whether through journaling, photographs, or keepsakes, you create a tangible reminder of the incredible journey you’re undertaking and the remarkable changes happening within your body. These moments serve as poignant reminders of the beauty and wonder of pregnancy, offering solace and joy during the more challenging times (because goodness me the challenging times during pregnancy come!) and serving as a testament to the incredible strength and resilience of the human body (the body of both mom and baby!).

Pregnancy Milestones To Cherish

Embracing every milestone allows you to fully immerse yourself in the magic of pregnancy, creating lasting memories that you’ll cherish for a lifetime. Here is a rundown of the pregnancy milestones to cherish that have really stuck with me. Plus, at the bottom of the post, you’ll find some shopping finds in line with what I’m wearing in this post – I included only dresses that can accommodate a bump. My linen dress is a dream to slip into, pregnant or not (also comes in a floral). It is breezy and shockingly flattering considering how flowy and forgiving it is.

Also to note, my woven heels are almost sold out everywhere online but I found them here with a lot of sizes left so I’m thinking they might have been restocked. Nab them while you still can – they are so comfortable. If you are going to wear a heel while pregnant, let them be these!

Positive Pregnancy Test

The moment you find out you’re expecting marks the beginning of your incredible journey into motherhood. The butterflies I feel when seeing my first positive pregnancy tests of a pregnancy are unlike any other butterflies I’ve ever felt in my life. The feelings of excitement, joy, and disbelief are immediate!

Telling your Husband or Partner

A close second on the butterflies chart is telling your husband that you are pregnant. It is so incredibly exciting that I have a hard time finding the words. It is the most beautiful testament to the life you are building together and the love you share. I wish I could relive these moments and these conversations or go back in time and watch myself tell Edwin our news.

First Ultrasound

Seeing your baby’s heartbeat for the first time on an ultrasound is a milestone that I cherish so much. It is something that no parent takes for granted but I can tell you that my experience with loosing 3 babies to miscarriage makes me especially cherish this milestone. I most certainly hold my breath and then say the biggest prayer of thanks when I see a strong, healthy heartbeat. Overall, the first ultrasound just makes the pregnancy feel all the more real and concrete in a happy and positive way (opposed to some of the other early markers that don’t feel quite so positive like morning sickness).

Sharing The News With Friends and Family

When you know you are pregnant in the first trimester but you aren’t sharing the news yet, it feels like you are walking around with the biggest secret in the world. It feels special to hold the news dear and close to your heart but then it is even more special when you share the baby news with your friends and family. I’ve love seeing the reactions of loved ones when we’ve told them we’re expecting!

Gender Reveal

This is a pregnancy milestone to cherish that I have never experienced because we wait until our children are born to find out their genders. The reveal during birth is utterly incredible; however, it is a surprise no matter when you find out. Whether you find out during an ultrasound or through a fun gender reveal of sorts, discovering your baby’s gender is a milestone that I think all parents look forward to.

Baby’s First Kick

Feeling your baby move for the first time is an unforgettable experience and a significant milestone in your pregnancy journey! I know exactly where I was the first time I felt all three of my babies kick for the first time. For Rowan, I was sitting at our kitchen nook eating lunch when I felt him kick for the first time at 20 weeks to the day. They say you feel subsequent pregnancies sooner because you recognize the feeling and this was absolutely true for me. With Henry, I felt him at 18 weeks to the day and for my current pregnancy, I felt him/her a few days before I hit 18 weeks. I quite literally said out loud to Edwin, “woah, my stomach just did a somersault” and then I instantly realized it was the baby!

Baby Shower

Celebrating the impending arrival of your little one with family and friends is one of the most special milestones that creates the most cherished, lasting memories. I had two small baby showers for Rowan – one in California and one in Charleston – and then had a sip and see for Henry after he was born. I love a baby shower or sip and see because, while they are both celebrations of the baby, they more so feel like celebrations of the mother. It is so marvelous to take time to celebrate moms and all that we do to bring children into the world. More baby shower celebrations and celebrations of pregnant women, please!

Nesting Phase

The urge to prepare for a baby’s arrival by setting up the nursery, washing baby clothes, and organizing baby supplies is a significant milestone that signifies the final stretch of pregnancy. With all three of my pregnancies, I have been hit hard with an extreme urge to nest, organize, declutter, prep, purge, deep clean, and accomplish life to-dos. There is nothing like having a baby to really kick me into gear and motivate me to be productive. That third trimester nesting energy is no joke!

Third Trimester Weeks Countdown

From reaching the third trimester to counting down the weeks until your due date, each milestone in the later stages of pregnancy brings you closer to meeting your baby. I find that in the third trimester, the weeks simultaneously fly by and also move like molasses.

Birth Plan Preparations

Creating a birth plan and discussing your preferences for labor and delivery with your doctor or midwife is an important milestone as you prepare for childbirth. I wrote a whole post back in 2021 on the question, “Are birth plans necessary?” that you can peruse. Ultimately, my take on it all is, when your baby is born, you just want, hope, and pray for a healthy baby and to bring him or her into the world in the safest way possible for you and your baby. Sometimes, you have to surrender and put your preconceived notions aside. I certainly had to! Also, here are some thoughts on how to prepare for a new baby.

Baby’s Due Date

While not all babies arrive on their due dates (in fact, I believe only about 5% of babies are born on their actual due dates), reaching this milestone marks the anticipated arrival of your little one and adds to the excitement of the final, final, final stretch of pregnancy. If you reach your due date and you haven’t given birth yet, celebrate yourself because you made it to 40 weeks and you are so very close! Go for a walk and eat some spicy food or pineapple (as the old wive’s tales suggest) and see if you can get your baby to make some moves on his or her own.

Birth and Meeting your Baby

The most significant milestone of all is the birth of your baby and the moment you finally get to meet and hold your precious little one in your arms. There is nothing more beautiful in the whole world than holding your baby for the first time. It is a moment you can never get back so hold it as near and dear to your heart as you possibly can. Your heart will split wide open and, in that instant, your whole life changes for the absolute best. It is the greatest gift in the entire world. I feel tremendously blessed to be about to meet our third baby. One way we’ve always made the hours after birth feel even more celebratory and special is to drink champagne in the hospital in special crystal we’ve brought or my parents have brought from home.
