Our Fourth Wedding Anniversary Getaway to Santa Fe

Santa Fe, New Mexico
filed under:

When Edwin and I tied the knot, we made a pact to take a getaway every year for our anniversary. Four years in and we haven’t broken the getaway promise we made to each other yet. Of course, it is fun to plan trips and to get carried away with that aspect of our pact but, in reality, we think it has been wonderful for us because life gets so incredibly busy and we don’t always have the opportunity to set aside time for ourselves and our marriage. Each trip has proven to be such a wonderful handful of days removed from the nuances of regular life, work, Edwin’s work travel, schedules, and now parenting.

Our first anniversary trip to Vermont marked the end of our honeymoon first year of marriage that comes and goes so quickly and was a great check-in because we were so busy and traveling non-stop at the time. Our second anniversary trip to the Inn at Perry Cabin in Maryland happened about a month after our first pregnancy ended in a miscarriage. The few happy undivided days together were such a godsend and just what we needed as a couple who was healing and trying to move forward. Our third anniversary trip to Cashiers, North Carolina took place about 6 weeks after we had Rowan so it marked our first time traveling as a family of 3 and was a blessed long weekend away in the midst of us juggling the exhaustion, craziness, and unknowns of our first go at the newborn months.

Our Fourth Wedding Anniversary Getaway to Santa Fe

This year, our fourth wedding anniversary getaway to Santa Fe, New Mexico came right in-between two seemingly endless stretches of Edwin traveling all over the country and the world for different shoots. When Edwin was home, we didn’t have tons of undivided time together so these 3 nights were both relaxing and so much fun to spend together.

We love the idea of being flexible with our anniversary getaways and, as such, are happy to do staycations (we haven’t yet but I’m sure it’s just a matter of time), shorter and longer trips, closer and father from home trips, and are happy to bring babies/littles if it makes sense that year. As I mentioned above, we had Rowan a little over a month before our third wedding anniversary so we brought him along that year to Cashiers, North Carolina. The trip was all the more perfect because of it! We absolutely couldn’t imagine leaving him at that point and his presence was a beautiful reminder of the family our marriage was creating.

Our Fourth Wedding Anniversary Getaway to Santa Fe

Our fourth wedding anniversary getaway to Santa Fe came about so easily. In fact, our three previous anniversary trips had all taken place on the East Coast so I mentioned to my sister (a travel advisor) that I wanted to go somewhere a bit different. She and I are both fans of Auberge hotels so she recommended Bishop’s Lodge in Santa Fe, New Mexico. I immediately said yes and that was that. Sarah helped us book and plan our trip at the beginning of the summer and then all I had to do was wait for it to roll around!

Edwin and I had both been to Santa Fe before, me 10 years previously and Edwin about 20 years previously. We both had memories of how beautiful and unique it was so I became bewitched with Santa Fe and the idea of returning. Santa Fe has so much of what we were looking for – incredible food (when I say incredible, I mean INCREDIBLE), beautiful weather, cultural experiences, lots of walking, outdoor activities (fishing and, if we’d had more time, hiking), a fantastic hotel, and opportunities to relax and just be.

Santa Fe was super easy to get to.

We flew to Albuquerque and rented a car for the hour or so drive up to Santa Fe. I would recommend renting a car for a trip to Santa Fe, even a short trip like ours, because it is great to be able to drive around to hikes, fishing, into town (our hotel was 10 minutes outside of the downtown area), and the surrounding area (there are so many day trips you can take to Taos etc).

As I mentioned above, we stayed just outside of downtown Santa Fe at the Auberge property Bishop’s Lodge. It is a really enchanting property with a rich history, yummy restaurants, beautiful scenery, and comfortable well-appointed rooms. The hotel just underwent a massive updating so everything was new and super nice with excellent decor. The spa wasn’t completed yet but I had an incredible massage in their temporary spa. We really enjoyed the restaurants. We loved our room (it had a great deck with a hot tub!). And we also thought everyone who worked at Bishop’s Lodge was amazing! If I found myself back in Santa Fe, I would definitely book the hotel again for a repeat stay.

Where We Ate In Santa Fe

Every single meal we had in Santa Fe was, no exaggeration, an 10/10. We couldn’t remember the last time we ate so well. The local Santa Fe/New Mexico style cuisine is bursting with flavor and just downright incredible. Everywhere we ate also had a fantastic atmosphere and the best service. Honestly, it felt like everyone really really loved the food they were serving and loved their Santa Fe lives.

SkyFire

The main restaurant at our hotel. It was delicious for dinner and breakfast with great ambiance, drinks, and food.

Geronimo

We agreed this was one of the best meals we’ve had in years! It was absolutely incredible with a wonderful atmosphere and fantastic service. An absolute must.

Cafe Pasqual’s

Simply delicious. This place has so much character and personality and completely incredible Santa Fe style food too. We trusted our waiter and ordered some of their crowd favorites!

The Shed

Get here early for lunch (aka right when they open!) to put your name in to have a shot at eating here without an insane wait. If you have to wait, it is completely worth it! We couldn’t have loved this casual New Mexico spot more.

Sazón

We went here for appetizers one night before a later dinner reservation and almost didn’t leave for our dinner because we loved it so much. Like everywhere we ate, the cuisine was out of this world! They are also known for their mezcal and tequila selections.

Also on our radar that we didn’t make it to were The Teahouse, Radish & Rye, Paper Dosa, El Nido, Sassella, Dr. Fieldgood’s, and La Choza.
