When writing this post on my must-have spring layer, I couldn’t help but think about and giggle about a line in Miss Congeniality. Do you know it? The one when Miss Rhode Island is asked to describe her idea of a perfect date and she answers with “April 25th because it’s not too hot, not too cold, all you need is a light jacket.” That’s exactly how I feel about Spring! It’s the perfect season. Especially in Charleston. The days get balmy and warm but the nights cool down enough to require a light layer. For me, sometimes that layer is a cropped cardigan, a blazer, or a shawl but most often, it’s a denim jacket.

I’ve been wearing denim jackets since I was a little girl. I can picture so many photographs of my siblings and me all in denim jackets! So I don’t foresee a day when I will stop. The fact is, denim jackets look great and appropriate on every generation. My mom wears denim jackets all the time in Charleston in the springtime just as I do! If you read R&R regularly, then it won’t be a surprise that J.Crew is my go-to for classic everyday pieces like jean jackets.
I love the light wash of the denim jacket I’m wearing because it makes it so suitable for spring and summer. It looks fabulous over dresses (as seen in this post!) and hits just right with skirts and high-waisted jeans/pants (it’s a little longer than the point of my waist where my high-waisted jeans/pants hit so it balances nicely). Without fail, it’s the easiest layer to throw on over anything and always my must-have spring layer when I’m in a hurry because I don’t have to think… I know it goes with everything!
Last year, I scooped up a white denim skirt and loved the fresh, easy look so much as seen here (similar: one, two, three). So, this year, I’m feeling super inspired to add a white denim jacket to my closet! This blue jean skirt also has my name all over it… the buttons!
Basket bags… need I say more!? I shared my thoughts yesterday on how the basket bag look is here to stay so scoop one up if you don’t have one already. The basket tote bag style is amazing for beach trips, pool days, farmer’s market runs, travel carryons, and everyday wear for earrings and more. By far my favorite style I’ve seen so far this year is this macrame basket tote I got but I also love these fun styles:
These espadrilles are my favorite! You might recognize them from this post last summer or from yesterday’s February Edit. I’m going to go out a limb here and say that they are the “it” shoe of spring and summer this year. The best part is that while they are the “it” shoe, they aren’t trendy. Espadrilles are in style every single year. I have them in this adorable denim blue color but I really want to add a pastel color to my closet this year. You can shop lots of color options here! These stretch out so if you are in between sizes then I recommend sizing down.
Lately, Tuckernuck has been having some great sales and I have to admit, I’ve been taking advantage of them! One of the pieces I bought was this blue and white stripe ruffle dress. This day (a glorious early spring day in Charleston!) was my first time wearing it. However I know it’s the first of many. I already know I’ll pack this dress for Nantucket this summer when Allison and I go in July! I rounded up some similar blue and white dresses for you here since mine is about to sell out:

Thank you so much Natali! I so appreciate your sweet comment! xx
I love this! Blue is my favorite color and I love wearing all blue in the summer time. I love this denim jacket. I have one that is more darker blue, but I love the look of the lighter blue!
Thanks so much for the love Mackenzie! I’m all about the light wash denim jacket these days too! XO
