There’s no denying it. Writing wedding thank you notes is the most time consuming to-do list task that comes with having a wedding. I’ve gotten through all my thank you notes from our engagement party, my bridal showers, and my bachelorette party. I have done some solid work on our wedding thank you notes but it has definitely taken time and effort. So if you’re still waiting for a wedding thank you note from me, it’s coming!).

In light of my recent experience with thank you notes, I wanted to share my tips. So today I’m sharing how to master wedding thank you notes. I’ve come up with a few things that have helped me and used a company, Basic Invite, that has made it so much easier for me to tackle this task so keep reading!

P.S. I’m just realizing now that I should have posted this on Wednesday as a Wedding Wednesday post, whoops!

How to Master Wedding Thank You Notes

Wedding thank you notes are a TASK really unlike any other in the wedding process. As our list of gifts got longer and longer, I felt beyond grateful to have so many people showering our marriage in love but I also couldn’t help but think about the thank you notes to come. However, once I got started writing them and I found my groove, it wasn’t so bad. So, here are my tips for how to master wedding thank you notes:

Think about each thank you note as the gift, instead of as a burden.

If you are writing a thank you note for the blender you really wanted (aka the best gift!), then think about all the gratitude you feel for the blender and for the person who gifted it to you. Trust me, your thank you notes will be more personal, honest, and funny this way and the act of writing the thank you note will feel uplifting instead of like a drag.

Create a Microsoft Excel sheet for your gifts.

Yes, it takes a bit of time on the front end to type in the gifts from handwritten notes and lists from bridal showers etc. but it’s so worth it in the long run! You already have an alphabetized list of your wedding guests so make a new Excel sheet with this list or add a column to an existing Excel sheet for gifts.

This way all your gifts are are in alphabetical order by gift giver! You can create multiple columns, i.e. one for engagement party gifts, one for bridal shower gifts, one for bachelorette lingerie gifts (if you do a lingerie shower), one for wedding gifts etc. Also, if you know you are going to see “The Nortons” at a party, then you can quickly check your gift list to remember what they got you and then fill them in on how much you love it/use it when you see them!

Set attainable goals by diving your thank you notes into small groups.

Depending on the day, I either sit down to write a set number of thank you notes (usually 10) or a set group of thank you notes (ex: based on my Excel sheet, gifts from people on our list with last names starting with A-D). It’s too daunting to sit down and simply “write thank you notes”. Plus chances are you will get distracted and walk away from the open-ended project. Instead, make it a set project of 10 notes at a time or notes from A-D and finish them incrementally. You will feel accomplished at the same time.

Meet Basic Invite Thank You Cards

At first, it didn’t even occur to me to get a large set of custom stationery for our wedding thank you cards. I don’t know why because I had so much fun with our save the date invites and our wedding invitations. Honestly it would make sense to have fun with our thank you notes too! Instead, I was buying cute little thank you card sets I saw around at different paper stores. Those packs usually came with about 10 cards. Well, as you can imagine, it was expensive and was getting annoying to always be running out of cards. I would always be writing notes on different sized cards. Or always have pens write differently on the different paper textures… the list goes on.

A friend asked me why I hadn’t gotten wedding thank you stationery and a light bulb went off. It was exactly what I was missing! I quite literally ran to my computer and placed an order with Basic Invite. They do the most beautiful custom cards for every single life occasion you can think of so I knew they would have what I needed. By custom, I mean over a hundred different fonts, unlimited color combinations (once you select a design you can change the color of each element on the card to over 180 different color options), over 40 different colored envelope options, and multiple paper options as well as online previews and custom samples that they send you in the mail. I started out with the custom samples route…

The Process

I wasn’t entirely sure what I wanted our wedding thank you cards to look like. Except I knew that I wanted them to be fun and to make me happy when I looked at them (keeping the thank you note process light over here!). So, I decided to select my six favorite options. Including the design, color, paper type, envelop color, font, text and order a sample of each. Once they arrived at the mail, I was able to hold them in my hands and really pick my favorite. I then went back into my Basic Invite account and ordered a bulk order. It was SO easy. Having fun, colorful wedding thank you notes has honestly made the process of writing wedding thank you notes so much easier. Plus, it’s makes me happier while writing them.

  1. I LOVE basic invite! we used them for my sister’s baby shower and had such a good experience.

Also, glad you’re talking about wedding thank you cards because a few weddings I’ve been to, I haven’t gotten one and it’s so frustrating! I am hoping they’re just VERY late but alas, nothing yet!
