I discovered today’s fashion find through a huge-hearted friend of mine who is passionate about the mission of Gaia Empowered Women and the stunning pieces Gaia sells. So, you haven’t heard of Gaia and you’re wondering what the mission of Gaia is? Gaia pieces are made using vintage, repurposed, and sustainable materials by refugee women who have resettled in Dallas, TX. In the words of the Gaia team, “our mission is to empower marginalized women through employment, encouragement, and dedication to their long-term success in our own local communities.”
In Greek Mythology, the word Gaia means “goddess of the earth.” The company decided to call themselves Gaia as a way of honoring all women including the talented women who hand make the Gaia pieces and the women who contribute by purchasing the products.
The refuges who craft for Gaia make a range of beautiful products from bracelets to clutches to banners to table linens. Did you see my Instagram of my Gaia keychain (I got #19) and my zipper pouch (I got the gypsy pouch but I also love the BFF, bisou, and ciao pouches)? Both pieces are new staples of my purse!
The best part: each piece you purchase comes with a card about the refugee woman who handmade your product (you can also learn about the women online). Reading about the woman who made my zipper pouch brought a huge smile to my face. So, you can shop and help a woman/family in need? It doesn’t get much better.
