Fall Shoe Trends

filed under:

Fall is such a fun time to shop for and wear shoes. In the spring and summer, I wear a lot of simple raffia sandals so I always get really excited to pull out some of my more exciting fall shoes. In the fall, I wear a ton of loafers, booties, and boots but I always wear some unexpected shoes like espadrilles (as seen here). Today, I’m going to spill on some of my favorite fall shoe trends, which includes some shoe classics that I’ve had in my closet for years like Hunter boots and LL Bean boots! Yes, I know this post has the word ‘trends’ in it but most of the shoes you’ll find below are classics that happen to ‘trend’ every fall. If you’re in the mood for a new pair of shoes, then this post is for you!

LL Bean Boots

LL Bean boots are about as classic East Coast fall as you can get. I’ve been a forever fan of Bean Boots are worn them countless times on the blog as well as the million times I’ve worn them in real life. I have a guide for shopping Bean Boots with everything you need to know… it’s a must-read before scooping up your first pair!

Hunter Boots

Hunter boots are one of my favorite shoes for weather conditions… cold weather, rainy weather, and snowy weather. I also wear Hunter boots for outdoor activities like canoeing and walking my dog on the beach in the fall (I can be in and out of the water with her in hunter boots!). Charleston is no stranger to rain so my Hunter boots come in handy all the time!

Rain Boots

Yes, I just shared Hunter boots as a must-have fall shoe because they are the rain boots I wear the most often. However, I wanted to share a few pairs of other rain boots with y’all in case Hunter boots aren’t your cup of tea. Rainboots can be knee high to provide a lot of coverage or can hit mid calf or be a bootie style. Do you live in a city? Do you live in the mountains? Where you live will probably dictate what type of rainboots you need.

Cowboy Boots

I actually wear cowboy boots more often than I show on Rhyme & Reason. I’ve had the exact same pair for years and years because a pair of quality cowboy boots wears so well. Mine get a tone of wear when we are in Jackson Hole and when I travel to Colorado! Cowboy boots are perfect for fall! Think harvest festivals, country concerts, football games, and more. P.S. if you haven’t heard of Tecovas, they are a great brand for cowboy boots!

Loafers

Loafers are great because they are a comfortable shoe style that can be worn all day, every day. I like loafers so much because they are a timeless, smart look that can be preppy, feminine, and on trend depending on the pair. A few loafer styles in my closet that I recommend: leather, suede, leopard, velvet, and backless (mules). I wear my leopard loafers at least once a week in the fall and get so many compliments. They are the perfect pop of animal print.

Sneakers

Sneakers are the best simply because of comfort. In the summer, when I grab shoes and go, it’s simple raffia slides. In the fall, when I grab shoes and go, it’s loafers or sneakers. With so many cute sneaker styles available now days, it’s hard not to want them all! I love athletic styles and chic everyday ready to wear styles.

Heeled Booties

One of my favorite fall shoes is the heeled bootie. When it comes to heeled booties, I definitely gravitate toward block heeled styles. They are comfortable and the most practical fall heel style (however, these kitten heel white boots are totally out of my comfort zone but they have my eye!). Last year, I scooped up what are still my favorite pair of heeled booties I have, a pair of brown leather block heel booties from Sezane. I also always love heeled booties from Joie, J.Crew, and Rag & Bone.

Knee High Boots

The past few years, I’ve very much been of an ‘over the knee boots or bust’ mindset. However, this year, I find myself gravitating more and more toward knee high boots. I’m by no means casting my over the knee boots aside (quite the opposite, in fact!). Instead, I’m incorporating more knee high boots into my dressing. I love the way they pair with dresses and skirts!

Over the Knee Boots

My love for over the knee boots is real. I’ve always been such a fan. To me, nothing is easier than slipping into a pair of jeans and pulling a pair of otk boots on over the jeans. I’m always pairing over the knee boots with dresses and skirts too. My favorite over the knee boots are Stuart Weitzman (p.s. click that link for a lot of otk boots on sale!) but I’ve also found a number of much more affordable quality otk boots as well like this pair that I have and love (they run true to size)!

I know it is definitely the time of year when wish lists grow high – personal with lists, holiday wish lists, wish lists for your house, and wish lists for others you might be shopping for soon. So, take time to think about what you actually will wear or use opposed to what you simply want.

For me during this time of year, an article of clothing I often both want and know I will wear over and over again is a new pair of fall shoes. Whether that is loafers for work and everyday wear, sneakers for travel, Bean Boots for weather and outdoors activities, booties for dressier occasions and holiday parties, or over the knee boots for warm yet stylish outfits, there is always a shoe that can be updated. Each fall, the shoe I need most changes so think about what your closet needs. I hope this post gave you some inspiration!

  1. Wow, this is a pretty nifty list of the shoe trends for the fall season. And I completely agree with your opinions, especially the “Heeled Boots” and the “LL Bean Boots”. But one thing I think you might’ve let out were high-tops!

This is a new high top shoe I found. It’s unisex, and has the beautiful mix of Burgundy related colors. I ordered a pair, you should too. I have a strong feeling you’ll like it!
