I love embracing the time of year by dressing in accordance to the season’s color palette. You may remember that I shared a post dedicated to one of my favorite fall colors this year, marigold. Well, today I’m back with another color crush and sharing a burgundy style guide complete with tips on when you should wear burgundy accessories, burgundy jeans, burgundy suede ankle boots, and more. I recently snagged this burgundy cardigan (hint: stay tuned this week as I reveal how I styled it).

How To Wear Burgundy
How To Style Burgundy Tops & Sweaters
I like to think of burgundy as a shade off from a fall neutral. Neutrals are colors that are always appropriate to wear and burgundy is so fitting for fall that it starts to feel like a classic neutral. I love to wear burgundy tops and sweaters with skirt and both blue and black jeans as the colors work well together. For example, this top or this sweater would pair perfectly with this skirt (in ‘Vintage Indigo’ or ‘Heather Carbon’) while this cardigan would look perfect with high waisted jeans. You could even make it a monochromatic look by styling this silk top underneath the cardigan (as you read about here).
How To Style Burgundy Dresses
Now, if you want to take burgundy from a fall neutral look to a bold look, then wear the color in dress form for a full-body color-forward look. There are so many gorgeous burgundy dresses out that are perfect for fall and winter wedding season. I especially love the burgundy dresses in rich velvet and feminine lace. However, I also love this floral burgundy dress for more casual events like brunches or date nights (styled with this moto jacket).
How To Style Burgundy Boots & Shoes
An easy and quick way to add burgundy into your fall wardrobe, is to wear burgundy boots and shoes. Burgundy is a dark tone so think of burgundy shoes as an alternative to wearing black or brown shoes. For example, these burgundy suede ankle booties could easily be swapped in for black booties and worn with boyfriend, straight leg, or skinny jeans. These two ladylike heels (one, two) pair perfectly with mini, midi, and long skirts and dresses.
How To Style Burgundy Accessories
The last way I love to incorporate burgundy into my fall outfits (other than an accessional burgundy pant or two) is by wearing burgundy accessories. I’m a big hat person so I about died when I saw this perfect burgundy hat on sale. I snagged this burgundy purse on sale a few weeks ago but I love these three similar styles for less (one, two, three). I love the idea of dressing burgundy up for a party with these statement earrings. This chunky ribbed knit scarf looks all kinds of cozy and would be perfect for travel. Lastly, you can’t beat a bold burgundy lipstick (not technically an accessory, but kind of ha!).
I hope my burgundy style guide inspired you to add some burgundy into you fall and winter wardrobe! I’ll be sharing an outfit featuring my new favorite burgundy piece later this week. xx
